Brewer casts critical eye on budget planPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Gov. Jan Brewer is getting some help as she casts a critical eye on a new state budget passed by the Legislature.
Brewer reviewing budget proposal - Gov. Jan Brewer is reviewing an $8.2 billion budget proposal and taking testimony from folks Tuesday morning.
Brewer on Tuesday convened a so-called "stakeholders meeting" featuring panels of educators, local government officials and others that she assembled to state their concerns about the legislative budget.
The Legislature approved a budget last week that uses borrowing, spending cuts, raids on special-purpose funds and other techniques to close a big deficit.
Brewer isn't specifically saying she'll veto the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, but she says it isn't actually balanced and would hurt services.
Legislators haven't sent the budget to Brewer. Instead, they're hoping that negotiations produce a compromise.
