ORIGINAL REPORT -- April 29:
CHANDLER -- According to the Chandler Unified School District, a kindergartener at one of their schools died in a car accident Wednesday night.
School district spokesman Terry Locke said Ahmed Abdirahman, 6, died in a collision between two minivans on the westbound Loop 202 near Dobson Road at approximately 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
According to the Department of Public Safety, a minivan was westbound on State Route 202 near the Dobson Road exit when it veered off the road, hit highway structures and began rolling over. At least two people were ejected.
Then, a second minivan hit the first vehicle.
According to DPS spokesman Harold A. Sanders, there were a total of five people in the first minivan. One person died at the scene and four others were taken to local hospitals.
There were no injuries reported by the occupants of the second minivan.
Locke said counselors are providing support to students and staff at Chandler Traditional Academy Liberty campus on Thursday.
Teachers read a statement to their students telling them about the child's death.
Locke said staff members are contacting all of the parents in Ahmed's classroom to provide them with the news directly. A letter will go home with all students to notify all parents at the end of the day.
According to Locke, Ahmed's younger siblings, who do not attend the school, remain hospitalized. His second-grade sister has a broken leg and is recovering at home.
