PHOENIX - Sunday marks the first anniversary of the death of Phoenix Police officer George Cortez.
Cortez was shot and killed while trying to arrest a forgery suspect at a check cashing store. The two-year veteran police officer had just requested a transfer to the Maryvale precinct in west Phoenix to help with the increase in violent crime.
Three people have since been indicted in Cortez's murder. Officer Cortez left behind a wife and two young sons. He was only 23 years old.
