K9 sniffs out drug smuggler; 1,600 pounds of marijuana seized

The following is a press release from the Tucson Sector Border Patrol:

TUCSON -- Tucson Sector Border Patrol Agents seized over 1,600 pounds of marijuana. The marijuana was discovered in a vehicle stop near Sasabe, Arizona.

Yesterday afternoon, Border Patrol agents assigned to the Tucson Border Patrol station stopped a suspicious white Chevrolet utility truck on Highway 286 near Arivaca Road. As agents approached the vehicle and they could smell a strong odor of marijuana, but could not see any visible evidence. A Border Patrol K9 was brought to the scene to conduct a sniff search and alerted to the presence of narcotics. Agents then started opening the side panels of the utility truck and discovered numerous bricks of marijuana. The driver, a US citizen, was arrested for the smuggling of narcotics.

The marijuana was seized and the subject in custody will be turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for prosecution.

For fiscal year 2008, the Tucson Sector Border Patrol as seized over 669,000 pounds of marijuana with an estimated value of $535.8 million dollars.
