PRESCOTT - The following is a press release from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office:
On June 19, 2009, at approximately 10:45 P.M., a Yavapai County Sheriff's Office deputy was traveling towards Williamson Valley Road on Pioneer Parkway in Prescott. As he approached a red light, he saw a white Chevrolet truck following another truck on Williamson Valley Road at about 50 MPH with a distance of only one foot between vehicles. The deputy turned and followed the Chevrolet truck which now crossed over the double yellow line and pulled parallel to a Ford truck it had been following. Occupants from each vehicle were waving their hands outside the windows and the deputy was concerned occupants in both vehicles were engaged in a road rage incident.
The Chevy truck eventually slowed and pulled behind the Ford truck while both vehicles increased speed to 60 mph. The Chevy truck began driving on the right shoulder then swerving back and forth across the travel lane while flashing its headlights. The deputy requested assistance so he could safely stop both vehicles. As the Chevy truck made another attempt to pass the Ford, the deputy activated his emergency lights and siren causing the Ford truck to pull over. The deputy passed the Ford and assisting YCSO units made contact with its driver. The deputy was eventually able to stop the Chevy truck on Bard Ranch Road.
The driver of the Chevy truck was identified as 19-year-old Dustin Sanders from Prescott. Dustin admitted knowing the driver of the Ford and told the deputy they were just "playing around." The deputy immediately detected the odor of alcoholic beverages on Dustin's breath. After a field sobriety test, Dustin was arrested for Driving Under the Influence. His female passenger was released. During an inventory search of the vehicle prior to impound, an open container of beer was located along with 12 pack container of the same beer. Dustin was charged with DUI over .08, Person Under 21 Driving DUI, Reckless Driving, Open Container and Possession of Alcohol Under 21 years-of-age. Dustin was eventually cited and released.
The driver of the Ford truck was identified as 19-year-old James Kocis from Prescott. Deputies determined he was also DUI and he was arrested for DUI over .08, Underage Consumption and Aggravated DUI because his license was suspended due to a prior DUI conviction. Kocis was booked for these charges at the Camp Verde Detention Center. His vehicle was also impounded.
