Cheney speaks at American Legion National ConventionPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Vice President Dick Cheney says the United States will work with its allies to help ensure the independence of the republic of Georgia.
Cheney says the Bush administration supports democracy in Georgia, which earlier this month was attacked by Russian troops after a simmering conflict over the breakaway region of South Ossetia boiled over into open conflict.
His comments were made at the American Legion National Convention in Phoenix on Wednesday.
The vice president's appearance follows Republican presidential hopeful John McCain, who addressed the group of military veterans Tuesday.
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama won't attend, but he sent a videotaped message that's expected to be played at the convention on Wednesday.
