PRESCOTT - The following is a press release from the Prescott Police Department:
At about 6:00 P.M. yesterday evening, Prescott Police officers arrested Prescott Valley resident Derek Michael Rotsteen, 24, who was wanted in connection with the beating of 25-year old Prescott resident Danny L. Collum.
On May 15, 2009 Collum and a female acquaintance was preparing to leave Matt's Saloon on Whiskey Row. A subject, later identified as Rotsteen, who was unknown to neither Collum nor the female acquaintance, requested and was given a ride. While driving down the road, the two occupants felt uncomfortable with Rotsteen and pulled into the parking lot of the Best Western Prescottonian Hotel where they asked Rotsteen to get out of the vehicle. After his refusal, Collum got out and opened Rotsteen's door while making a secondary request. At that point, Rotsteen got out and punched Collum where he fell to the ground and Rotsteen continued to punch and kick Collum in the head. Collum was later flown by medical helicopter to Good Samaritan hospital in Phoenix with fractured head injuries.
Detectives followed up on the case and obtained and viewed video from Matt's Saloon. The detective saw the suspect talking with both Collum and his female acquaintance as they were getting ready to leave the saloon that evening. They also saw the suspect speaking with another unknown female who Matt's Saloon personnel were able to identify. Detectives contacted the female subject who identified the suspect as Rotsteen.
After Rotsteen was located and arrested yesterday, he was in possession of Narcotic Drugs and prescription only drugs. He was charged with those crimes in addition to the initial Aggravated Assault charge. He was transported to the Camp Verde jail where he is being held without bond pending his initial court appearance.
