Photo enforcement van driver arrested for DUIPosted: Updated:
SCOTTSDALE -- A photo enforcement van driver was arrested for DUI after a motorist reported seeing him hit a curb Saturday evening.
At about 6:30 p.m., the Scottsdale Police Department was contacted by a retired police officer who was following a marked photo enforcement van southbound on Scottsdale Road near McDonald Drive.
The witness told dispatchers he thought the driver was impaired because he saw the van hit a curb twice and nearly collide with the vehicle in front of it, according to Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark.
A Scottsdale police officer located the van near Indian School Road. Clark said the officer saw the van weaving from lane to lane and pulled it over.
Clark said the officer could smell alcohol on the driver's breath and asked him to perform the standard field sobriety tests, which indicated impairment.
The officer arrested the driver for driving while impaired.
Clark said the registered owner of the van is Redflex Traffic Systems and the driver, Roderick M. Ruffin, 53, is a Redflex employee.
Ruffin was booked and released from Scottsdale City jail. He is being charged with extreme DUI. His blood alcohol content reportedly was more than .15.
Ruffin was fired from his job with Redflex.
