PHOENIX - A gas tanker fire on a Valley freeway caused some problems for motorists Monday evening.

A spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Public Safety tells 3TV Interstate 17 is closed in both directions at Van Buren, as well as the southbound Interstate 10 ramps.

This stretch of freeway was closed due to the gas tanker that went up in flames at about 7:30 p.m. There is no further information on how extensive the blaze was but 3TV did learn the gas tanker was carrying up to 9,000 gallons of fuel.

DPS officers and Phoenix Fire were all on the scene for much of the night.

Traffic traveling southbound on I-17 was detoured onto Interstate 10 while northbound traffic was routed off at 19th Avenue and Adams Street.

The road was completely open to traffic shortly before 12:30 a.m.
