RAW: UPDATE: Bird flies into car, causes fatal wreck - A driver hit and killed a pedestrian Friday morning when a bird flew into his car and distracted him.
It happened at about 8 a.m. at 51st Avenue and Indian School Road.
According to police, the driver of the car told them he became distracted when a bird flew through his driver's side window and was flapping around inside the car. Police said the driver, whose name has not been released, was trying to get the bird out of the car and did not see the 60-year-old man walking across the street. Preoccupied by the bird, the driver slammed into that pedestrian.
The victim, who has not been identified, was in extremely critical condition when he was taken to the hospital.
Police originally reported that the man had died, but he remains in critical condition.
At this point, police do not have any reason to doubt the driver's story.
"As I arrived on scene, my officers and sergeant were standing next to the driver's vehicle, and I did see a small bird come flying out of his car," said Lt. Cheryl Gipson-Thurman of the Phoenix Police Department. "It's probably truly what happened in this situation."
Pursuing standard avenues of investigation, police said the driver did not appear to be intoxicated or otherwise impaired. It's not yet clear what charges that man might face.>
