According to police, the girls, ages 11 and 9, were riding in the Boulder Recreation Area Sunday afternoon when their ATV went into a desert wash and flipped.

While the older girl fell off the vehicle just before it rolled, the 9-year-old was trapped beneath it.

The girls' father was riding ahead of them with their little brother. The father ran back and performed CPR on his daughter until rescuers could get to the scene.

The 9-year-old was air-lifted to St. Joseph's Hospital where she later died. The 11-year-old was transported by ambulance. She is expected to recover.

The Boulders Recreation Area is one of the few legal areas in the northwest Valley for ATV riding and off roading.
