Family returns to nothing

GLENDALE -- An overnight fire destroyed a home in the northwest Valley.

The fire broke out at a house near 55th Avenue and Bell Road in Glendale late Monday night.

A person who was walking by spotted the fire and called 911.

Neighbors said nobody was home at the time because the homeowners were away on vacation.

Crews on the scene believe the fire started in the back of the house.

According to the Glendale Fire Department, the part of the house that burned was an add-on that nearly doubled the original size of the home.

"That whole back side of that extension of the house was heavy in fire and heavy fire through the roof when we got on scene," said Battalion Chief Tim Wayne.

The home reportedly is a total loss.

Investigators are trying to determine what sparked the fire.
