Police officers possibly targeted in Tempe shooting

TEMPE -- There were some tense moments in a Valley neighborhood late Monday night when some shots were fired, possibly at two Mesa police officers.

Suspects still on the loose

Police are still searching for the suspects.

It all started at about 11 p.m., when the two officers were following a suspicious-looking car into a neighborhood near Loop 101 and Southern Avenue in Tempe.

The officers had called for backup, but while they were waiting, a second vehicle pulled behind the care they were following.

It was a person in that second car who pulled the trigger.

Investigators are not sure if the gunfire was aimed at the officer or if somebody else was the target.

Officers detained the people in the car they were initially following. Investigators are questioning those people about the shooting.
