1 killed in I-10 wreck west of Phoenix, EB lanes closed - The Department of Public of Safety said at least one person was killed in an early morning wreck involving a tractor-trailer and a minivan on Interstate 10.
It all happened just after 5 a.m. in the eastbound lanes at milepost 58.5, which is about 10 to 15 miles west of the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station.
In the first wreck, the driver of a Chevy Suburban apparently lost control of the vehicle. The driver of the semi swerved to avoid the Suburban, causing the trailer to roll onto its side. Both drivers suffered inujuries, said Harold Sanders of the Department of Public Safety. It's not clear if either was taken to the hospital.
In the second wreck, a minivan that was behind the semi plowed into the overturned trailer. There were three people in that minivan. One of them was killed.
Aerial video showed the semi on its side, blocking all of the eastbound lanes. The closure lasted for hours and the backup went on for several miles.
Chopper reporter Jimmy Costanzo said he saw two medical helicopters leaving the scene en route to Phoenix, but nothing was known about the patients on board.
DPS was able to open one lane of eastbound traffic by about 8:30 a.m. The highway was completely open by 11:30 a.m., and by noon, the backup had reportedly cleared.
DPS investigators are looking into both wrecks.
