Suspect stabs woman returning home after jogging

Neighbor trapped suspect

PHOENIX --The following is a press release from the Phoenix Police Department:

Just before 5 PM (Friday evening) a suspect was burglarizing a residence when the victim, an adult female, entered her home after going for a run with her adult female friend.

The suspect confronted the victim, who began screaming. The suspect stabbed the victim once in the chest inside the residence. Neighbors heard the victim screaming.

Several neighbors responded to the screams and called police. One adult male neighbor got his shotgun and, while standing outside, kept the suspect inside the house as officers arrived.

Several officers put the victim in a patrol car and drove her to firefighters nearby while other officers contained the suspect in the house.

The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and is now expected to survive.

The suspect surrendered without incident at approximately 6:40 PM to Special Assignment Unit officers.

The victim's family has not yet been notified.

Investigators expect the suspect will be booked into jail on various charges including armed burglary and aggravated assault. He is currently in custody and will be interviewed.

The neighbors involved responded immediately to assist the victim and officers. They did a great job.
