Man sentenced to 379 years in prison for molesting 5 girls

UPDATE: County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced today that Phoenix resident Wayne Calvin Simmons (DOB 11/30/57) has been sentenced to 379 years in prison after Simmons was convicted of 19 charges related to the molestation of five girls. On February 26, 2009 Simmons was convicted on all counts by a superior court jury.

According to Phoenix police reports and facts presented at trial Simmons molested the children beginning in 1989 and through the early 90's, in the mid 90's, and again in the period of 2006 to 2007. The victims were between six and 10 at the time of the crimes.

The victims were related to two different girlfriends Simmons had lived with. They included sisters and a pair of cousins. The allegations came to light when the victims came forward. Police began interviewing them in May of 2007. Simmons was arrested in September of that year and later indicted on 19 charges. Deputy County Attorney Yigael Cohen prosecuted the case.

Thomas stated, "The case agent from Phoenix Police and our prosecutor were determined to make sure a serial child predator never gets out of prison."

ORIGINAL: PHOENIX - County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced today that Phoenix resident Wayne Calvin Simmons, 51 (DOB 11/30/57), has been found guilty of charges related to the molestation of five minor female children between 1989 and 2006. Simmons was indicted on three counts of Molestation of a Child, class two felonies and dangerous crimes against children, and 16 counts of Sexual Conduct with a Minor, class two felonies and dangerous crimes against children, on September 20, 2007. A jury returned guilty verdicts on all counts on February 26, 2009. Simmons will be sentenced on April 3, 2009. He faces in excess of 300 years in prison.

According to a Phoenix police probable cause statement, beginning in 1989 and through the early 90's, in the mid 90's, and again in the period of 2005 to 2006, Simmons engaged in the molestation and sexual abuse of five minor female children; their ages at the time of the incidents ranged between six and 10 years old. The victims included sisters and a pair of cousins. The abuses happened in Phoenix where the defendant was a live in boyfriend of the victims' relatives.

Phoenix police detectives interviewed the victims between May 2007 and August 2007 as part of its investigation. Simmons was arrested on September 11, 2007 and due to the nature of the charges was held non-bondable.

"Phoenix police have done this community a great service through the investigation and apprehension of this defendant," said Thomas. "And the jury has given the victims in this case much-deserved justice."
