Phx retiree becomes instant millionaire on AZ slot machine

Fort McDowell, AZ - The Ft. McDowell Casino awarded the first Wheel of Fortune® Special Edition€ž MegaJackpot® of the year on Thursday, January 1st, in the amount of $1,779,137.

The winner, Marilyn D. a retiree from Phoenix, Arizona, said she came to the casino with her son and the winning machine was the " only one open." She went on to say that she had just walked into the area, invested only $20, and couldn't believe she hit the top jackpot award.

"I was only here 10 minutes. I told my son, 'We did it! Oh my God! I won!" she said.

When asked about immediate plans for her winnings, the new millionaire commented, "[I] don't know, geez, that's a lot of money!"

Thursday's jackpot is the first ever Wheel of Fortune® Special Edition€ž MegaJackpot® to hit at the casino and the first MegaJackpot® in Arizona to be paid so far this year.

It is also the tenth jackpot to be paid at the casino since 1996. Since November 1996, the Fort McDowell Casino has awarded over $5.6 million on a variety of progressive gaming systems including one other jackpot over one million dollars. In May of 2006, the casino paid a $1 million Wheel of Fortune ® progressive MegaJackpot® on the one-dollar progressive system.
