Event-packed weekend means lots of road closures

Roads, busses, light rail affected

PHOENIX -- A long list of weekend events in the Valley means a lot of driver tie-ups.

Here is how ADOT work, the PF Chang marathon and the Cardinals Championship game will affect traffic. Let's start with freeway closures.

Work is being done on the 51 throughout the weekend. Saturday, northbound 51 will close between Bell road and the Loop 101 from 7am to 6pm. Then Sunday southbound will close in the same area.

Work is also scheduled for the northbound Loop 101 between Baseline road and Rio Salado Parkway. That begins Friday night at 11pm and goes through 5am Sunday.

Southbound Loop 101 will close on-ramps at Warner, Ray and the exit ramp on Chandler boulevard.

The PF Chang marathon will roll into town Sunday and disrupt both bus and light rail service as 30,000 runners make their way through Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe.

The light rail stations which will remain closed until 10am Sunday or whenever the race clears stretch from Montebello and 19th avenue to Encanto and Central. Bus routes will also be affected until well into the afternoon.

Finally... Cardinals fans and those living near the stadium will be dealing with a traffic headache throughout Sunday as well.

Ticket holders have parking passes with instructions on the back to direct them to their designated lot. But for everyone else Glendale police will be out there on game day keeping things moving and opening extra lanes.

There will also be a free shuttle service moving between the overflow lot and the stadium.
