Police catch alleged copper thieves in the actPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Police officers say they were in the right place at the right time to stop a pair of potential copper thieves, and 3TV's cameras were there when it went down.
The two suspects were caught Thursday afternoon in the area of 27th Street and Camelback Road.
Investigators said a training officer and a rookie spotted the men after hearing power tools in the basement of an abandoned building.
The two men allegedly were stealing any metal they could get their hands on, including copper and brass.
Metal thefts, which are becoming more and more common, especially in vacant building like those along Camelback Road, can cause millions of dollars in damage.
Police said they managed to catch several thieves by continuing regular patrols.
