Tucson breaks own record for most homicides in one year

TUCSON - Tucson has broken its record for most homicides in a year with 74 people killed in 2008 in Arizona's second-largest city.

The previous record was 65 homicides in 1995.

Tucson police say they've worked throughout the year to keep the numbers from going any higher by targeting violations including large parties and curfew violations, which tend to lead to violent crime.

Police also continued an outreach program that aimed to steer youths away from crime.

The killings in Tucson account for the majority of the 100-plus homicides overall in the area. The rest, 27 homicides, occurred in Pima County compared to 30 slayings in the county in 2003.
