Mom enters guilty plea

MESA -- County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced Friday that Tiffany Hecker, 21, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the 2007 death of her newborn baby.

MESA - A Valley woman has entered a guilty plea in the 2007 death of her newborn.

Tiffany Hecker, 21, pleaded guilty to 2nd-degree murder of her newborn son, who died in January of 2007.

According to police, Hecker gave birth in the toilet of her Mesa home on January 22. She allegedly picked up the baby and placed it back in the toilet before taking the body to Chandler Regional Medical Center.

Hecker was indicted after a medical examiner determined the baby had been alive at birth.

Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas says, "This horrible death didn't have to happen. Arizona has a safe haven law intended to prevent this tragic situation, which has left a newborn baby dead and his mother facing prison time."

Heckler pleaded guilty to the highest charge against her under the "Plead-to-the-Lead" policy which requires suspects to plead to the most serious charge or go to trial.
