Arrest records show most arrests involve LatinosPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says it has the proper training and procedures in place to ensure that its deputies are not racially profiling.
But a review of arrest records by The Arizona Republic shows that most people arrested during crime sweeps by the sheriff's office were Latinos.
The records show the sweeps frequently targeted heavily Latino areas or day-labor corridors, and most of those arrested during highly discretionary stops for reasons such as cracked windshields were Latinos.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio has vehemently denied that deputies were profiling. While he has trumpeted the arrests of illegal immigrants during the sweeps, he also has argued that the main purpose was to suppress crime, not go after immigrants.
