According to Gilbert police, the two-year officer had finished his shift at approximately 11 p.m. Sunday and was still in uniform when he attempted to contact a woman suspected of shoplifting in the Wal-Mart parking lot near Williams Field Road and Market Street.

That's when the woman, Veronica Rodriguez, 25, of Sacaton, and Therin Castillo, 27, attacked the officer.

Gilbert police Sgt. Mark Marino said the officer fired one shot at Castillo, striking him below his belt line.

Marino said Rodriguez again assaulted the officer and was arrested. She was booked on aggravated assault on a police officer and shoplifting charges.

Castillo was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was treated at a hospital and released.
