SCOTTSDALE - An 83-year-old Scottsdale woman was stabbed to death Sunday, and her 40-year-old neighbor is in custody.

Evidence led to neighbor

Scottsdale Police Sgt. Mark Clark says a 911 call came in at about 5:15 p.m. and officers responded to an unknown problem as the caller was unresponsive and left an open line.

When officers arrived at the victim's apartment, they found a rear patio door had been broken into. The woman, identified as Grace Wood, had been stabbed to death with a knife, which was found on the scene.

Clark says evidence led police to an upstairs neighbor, Jill Manahan, who was taken into custody.

Officials say that Scottsdale Police were called out to the same complex on the afternoon of July 17 after reports that the suspect was seen behaving strangely and not speaking coherently. This prompted officers to send Manahan to a medical center for a mental health evaluation. Records recovered at the suspect's home state she had been released on Sunday from Urgent Psychiatric Care before she allegedly killed her elderly neighbor.

The motive for the alleged murder remains unknown at this time.
