Glendale man dies in ATV accidentPosted: Updated:
GLENDALE - A Glendale man died while riding an ATV outside of Morristown, Ariz., on Sunday.
Morristown is located between Surprise and Wickenburg.
Denny Smith, 50, was helping other family members trying to negotiate a steep incline on a trail area when the accident occurred, according to Dwight D'Evelyn with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.
D'Evelyn said Smith had already ridden his quad to the top of the trail, but was riding his wife's quad so she could continue without having to negotiate the incline on her own.
Smith boarded the quad and began his ascent, but as some point he lost control while out of his family's sight and they saw the unmanned quad rolling down the hill.
D'Evelyn said the family found Smith farther up the trail with upper body and head trauma.
The family called 911 as they attempted to resuscitate Smith without success.
Although a helmet was accessible, authorities say Smith was not wearing one.
D'Evelyn said the trail section was unimproved, not maintained, and not marked. During the investigation, no mechanical issues with the vehicle were reported.
