Suspect dies in carjacking in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF -- A carjacking that began in Gallup, N.M., ended in Flagstaff Sunday with a suspect dead and a woman wounded.

Gallup police said a woman in her 70's was walking to her car when and a man with a gun approached and ordered her into the car.

The gunman, a woman, and the carjacking victim drove off westbound. The carjacking victim was later released in Winslow.

Flagstaff police said an OnStar device in the victim's car alerted authorities that the vehicle was in Flagstaff.

Officers tried to stop the suspect, but he sped off.

The driver eventually bailed out. Police surrounded him and ordered him to surrender. Instead, police say the man shot the woman passenger and then himself.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Allen S. Powers of New Century, Kan., died at the scene.

The woman was taken to a Flagstaff hospital with serious injuries.
