Supreme Court chief justice delivers address at UAPosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts says his predecessor, the late William Rehnquist, is one of the two or three most significant chief justices in history.
In a lecture Wednesday at the University of Arizona's law school, Roberts said Rehnquist was responsible for shifting presentations before the Supreme Court from a focus on legal text and legal precedence to analysis and legal arguments.
Roberts was named to the high court in September 2005 to succeed Rehnquist. He gave the college's third annual Rehnquist Center Lecture.
The nonpartisan Rehnquist Center on the Constitutional Structures of Government was established at the college in 2006, and the lecture series honors the late chief justice.
