PHOENIX -- A 9-year-old boy died after he was hit by a truck near 83rd Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road in southwest Phoenix Wednesday morning.
The boy's mother said he was supposed to be waiting in his front yard for the bus, which he does every morning.
She said she walked away for a few minutes and when she looked outside, he wasn't there.
She reported him missing about 8:30 a.m.
A few minutes later, police received a phone call about an accident on Lower Buckeye Road.
Witnesses say the boy had been standing on the sidewalk and ran out into five lanes of traffic on Lower Buckeye Road.
Officers say a gray Dodge truck going eastbound hit the boy as the driver slammed on his brakes.
A Tolleson High School bus that was not involved was a few feet away from the scene. A 16-year-old boy saw the accident.
According to the teen's father, his son said the child was standing on the curb and then ran off the curb and the truck was right there.
The 9-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries and was air-lifted to St. Joseph's Hospital where he later died.
Investigators do not suspect that the driver was impaired and they don't know why the boy wasn't at his bus stop in his front yard.
Investigators are still talking to witnesses and looking at evidence.
