Immigration-related kidnappings soaring, task force formedPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - The number of kidnapping-for-ransom cases in the Valley has skyrocketed over the past several years.
Since 2004 cases are up 325%. To combat the problem the county attorney's office has created a special team of prosecutors.
Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas says, "We're going to do everything we can with this specialized unit to focus on cracking down on kidnappings to get to the roots of this crime related to our immigration crisis."
The trend this year alone is already disturbing. More than 200 kidnapping-for-ransom cases have been submitted by Valley police and the county attorney's office hopes the new team will help make our streets safer.
