Avondale man indicted for allegedly molesting 11-year-old girl

Man accused of sexually assaulting 11-year-old - azfamily.com's Tyler Baldwin spoke to the mother of a suspect accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old neighbor.

PHOENIX and AVONDALE -- County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced today that Osvaldo Mercado-Ortiz (DOB 5/14/87) has been indicted in connection with the molestation of an 11-year-old girl in Avondale.

According to the probable cause statement filed by Avondale Police, Mercado-Ortiz molested the victim at an abandoned laundry mat in the early morning hours of June 7, 2009.

When police arrested Mercado-Ortiz, he allegedly gave them a false name. The defendant is jailed without bond and is believed to be illegally in the US. On June 16, 2009 Mercado- Ortiz was indicted for:

Sexual Conduct with a Minor, a class 2 felony and dangerous crime against children

False reporting to a law Enforcement Agency, a class 1 misdemeanor

Deputy County Attorney David Telles is prosecuting.

Thomas stated, "Crimes that hurt young children hurt an entire community as parents fear for the safety of their sons and daughters. We thank Avondale Police for their quick action in arresting a suspect."
