According to Chandler police Sgt. Joe Favazzo, Nathan Ryan, 27, used a T-shirt to tie the handle of a 24-inch-long sword to the steering wheel then drove into a block fence near Knox Road and Arizona Avenue.

Favazzo said the air bag deployed upon impact, bending the sword. Ryan was cut in the neck.

The car broke through the fence and crashed into a pool. Ryan was able to get himself out.

He was transported to an area hospital with wounds that are not life-threatening.

Police believe this was a suicide attempt.
