Former apartment manager accused of stealing tenants' rent moneyPosted: Updated:
TEMPE -- A former assistant manager at an apartment complex was arrested Thursday on suspicion of stealing rent money from tenants, according to the Tempe Police Department.
Wendy Rene Herrera, 37, worked at the Haven Apartments near Broadway Road and McClintock Drive in Tempe when she allegedly embezzled more than $8,300 between June 8 and July 20, 2008.
Tempe police said Herrera was arrested after an investigation revealed that she collected rent money paid by money orders and put her own name on the payee line.
The embezzlement was detected by an employee who was asked to do an audit of the tenants' accounts.
The apartment complex management notified the Tempe Police Department, who located Herrera and arrested her.
Herrera was booked into Tempe City Jail and charged with one count of theft and nine counts of forgery.
