UPDATE: Detectives try to ID remains found near Thumb Butte

UPDATE -- APRIL 22:

YAVAPAI COUNTY, Ariz. -- Yavapai County Sheriff's Office detectives are providing additional information regarding the human remains recovered near Thumb Butte on April 10.

Detectives have recovered a major portion of the human skeleton.

Based on a preliminary analysis, it was determined that the person was a male, 23 to 35 years old, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall with a 38-inch waist and wearing size-10 Converse shoes, which were found at the site.

During the investigation, detectives found an incident report from November 2007 in which a caller to the sheriff's office reported seeing a man near the area where the remains were found.

Deputies met with the reporting party and searched the vicinity, but they were unable to locate the man.

A second caller also reported seeing the male and indicated a possible need for medical attention. Detectives would like to locate this caller or anyone else who may have seen this man on Thumb Butte Road during November 2007.

ORIGINAL REPORT -- APRIL 15:

YAVAPAI COUNTY, Ariz. -- A man called the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office Friday evening after his dog found a human skull near Thumb Butte.

Sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said the man told deputies that he was walking his dogs in the Dearing Park area when one of them wandered off the trail and returned with a skull in its mouth.

On Monday, a Search and Rescue Team cadaver dog found more human bones in a rocky area adjacent to Thumb Butte Road. The bones were found on the opposite side of the road from where the skull was recovered.

Detectives believe the remains were that of a male.
