UPDATE: Pedestrian hit, killed by train in Flagstaff identified

UPDATE: March 20

FLAGSTAFF -- The pedestrian who was hit by a train on Wednesday, March 18 has been identified as Ray Sumatzkuku, 49, of Polacca, Arizona on the Hopi reservation.

Preliminary indications suggest alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.

The investigation is pending the toxicology report from the Coconino County medical examiners office.

ORIGINAL STORY: Investigation underway into pedestrian killed by train

On March 18 at 9:47pm, a pedestrian was struck by a train at the railroad crossing located on San Francisco Street just south of Route 66 in Flagstaff.

Officers arrived on the scene and found the victim who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial investigations reveal the pedestrian was walking southbound on San Francisco St., crossed under the lighted barricade arms, and was on the tracks when the eastbound train engineer continued to sound his train horn and engage his emergency brakes to avoid the collision.

Positive identification and next-of-kin notification is in progress and the investigation continues.
