COTTONWOOD -- The Federal Aviation Administration says two people are dead after a small plane crashed shortly after taking off from the airport in Cottonwood on Tuesday morning.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says the single-engine RV-6A plane took off at about 8:30 a.m. and crashed about a mile north of the field. The RV-6A is a kit-built aircraft that the FAA classifies as experimental.
Both people on board died in the crash.
The victims have been identified as Rajca H. Philip, 64, and Paul C. Haney, 73. Both were from Cottonwood.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
Cottonwood is about 20 miles southeast of Sedona.
