Plane makes emergency landing in Phoenix schoolyard - A pilot made an emergency landing in the playground area of a west Phoenix school Wednesday morning.
PHOENIX -- A pilot made an emergency landing on a school playground in west Phoenix about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The Cessba landed on the playground of Villa de Paz Elementary School near 103rd Avenue and Camelback Road.
The pilot reported engine trouble after taking off from the Glendale Municipal Airport, which is about 4 miles from the school.
The pilot was forced to cut the engine and coast across a field. The plane then hit a fence and flipped before landing behind some classrooms.
Students were evacuated from their classrooms for a short time as a precaution.
The pilot and co-pilot suffered minor injuries. No children were hurt.
The Federal Aviation Administration is trying to determine what caused the engine failure.
