PHOENIX (AP) -- The U.S. Senate has confirmed the former head of the Arizona Department of Transportation as the next administrator of the Federal Highway Administration.

The confirmation of Victor Mendez was announced by the highway administration on Monday. Executive director Jeff Paniati praised his leadership and experience.

Mendez has been acting administrator since January.

Mendez started at ADOT in 1985 as a transportation engineer. He was promoted to deputy director in 1999 and acting director in 2001.

Mendez's responsibilities will include overseeing federal stimulus spending for transportation and shepherding the reauthorization of the law guiding federal investment in the nation's network of roads and bridges.
