Chandler police lose 685 crime scene photosPosted: Updated:
CHANDLER -- Chandler police say nearly 700 crime scene photos used as evidence in 23 cases have been irretrievably lost because tech workers failed to back up computer files.
Police officials say manual processes to move photos to permanent storage were not being consistently followed.
The 685 photos were snapped at crime scenes in March 2007 by officers for use as evidence in investigations and potential prosecutions.
Some of the cases involved alleged domestic violence, assault and burglary and others were from a death investigation.
A police department spokesman says some of the cases may still be ongoing, but most probably have been either suspended or resolved and the loss of the crime scene photos is expected to have minimal impact.
