Napolitano to prod Ariz. schools on spendingPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Gov. Janet Napolitano is resuming efforts to encourage Arizona schools to boost the percentage of their spending that reaches the classroom.
Napolitano plans to fight to preserve funding for K-12 schools during upcoming work with lawmakers on closing a developing budget shortfall.
She says her efforts will be helped if she can point to districts that have succeeded in spending more in the classroom and less on administration.
The classroom spending ratio was an early priority in Napolitano's first term but she acknowledges it was put on the back burner in recent years.
She says state officials will ask districts to examine their spending and share ideas for finding savings.
