Speeding semi wrecks on I-10, dumps loadPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Eastbound Interstate 10 was closed for hours at 16th Street near the mini-stack due to a semi rollover Tuesday morning.
It happened shortly after 4:30 a.m.
Wooden carpet teck strips and some drywall were scattered all over the freeway. Sweepers and magnets were brought in to help clean up the mess.
The closure spawned a major backup. At about 6:30 a.m., traffic was backed up all the way to 19th Avenue.
The Department of Public Safety was advising commuters to exit at 16th Street and use Interstate 17 to get around the wreck. Northbound State Route 51, Loop 202 and 16th Street were also options to get around the area.
The freeway was closed for several hours while crews cleaned up and towed away the rolled semi.
It's believed that the driver of the truck was going too fast and lost control of his rig as the load shifted on the curve. That driver was not injured, but he was cited for speeding.
The freeway was re-opened to traffic after 9 a.m.
