7 Mountain rescues within 3 hours; 1 incident fatalPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - One person is dead and others are injured after seven different mountain rescues in the Valley.
Seven separate rescues
They stretched across the Valley from Pinnacle Peak to Piestewa Peak and South Mountain to Camelback Mountain where a day hike turned deadly.
The victim was still at the base of the mountain on Sunday afternoon. He was hiking alone so authorities are still trying to figure out who he is.
Firefighters say the victim appears to be a middle-aged man who had a heart attack while hiking the Echo Canyon side of Camelback Mountain. It happened about a quarter of the way up at the steepest and most difficult part of the hike.
If you are familiar with Camelback, the victim collapsed at the first set of hand rails.
Other hikers who happened to be trained in CPR tried to resuscitate the man.
Tricia Griegel tells 3TV, "Everybody was wonderfulan Army medic, nurse, lifeguard...those guys did chest compressions for a long time before paramedics were able to get up there."
Nevertheless, that man did not make it off Camelback alive on Sunday. Another woman did. She broke her ankle and had to be carried down from near the top of the mountain. She is one of six people who were successfully rescued from Valley mountains on Sunday, which proved to be a busy day for rescue crews.
