Doctor: former Arizona coach Lute Olson had strokePosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Lute Olson's doctor says he had a stroke within the last year and that he advised Olson to retire as Arizona's basketball coach.
Dr. Steven Knope says an MRI confirmed the stroke, which left the 74-year-old Olson with severe depression and impaired judgment.
Olson suddenly announced his retirement last week, two days after he appeared at the Wildcats' media day and said he was "energized" and looking forward to his 25th season with Arizona.
Olson announced his retirement in a press release and has not spoken publicly since.
Olson took a personal leave of absence last season for what he later termed a "medical condition that was not life-threatening."
