PHOENIX -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has launched a criminal investigation of a Maricopa County supervisor who has been a frequent critic of Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Sheriff investigating Maricopa County supervisor - A Maricopa County supervisor and frequent critic of Sheriff Joe Arpaio is under criminal investigation by the sheriff's office.
According to an Arizona newspaper, Arpaio's office has filed a public-records request with Phoenix official for information about Mary Rose Wilcox and her husband Earl Wilcox, a former state lawmaker.
The sheriff's office has gone to the Phoenix Aviation Department to find out more about how the couple's businesses -- El Portal and Chili's Too at Sky Harbor International Airport -- were awarded concession contracts.
Arpaio has also requested financial-disclosure information going back to 1992. In addition, he's looking at Wilcox's involvement with local non-profit organizations and her husband's connections to the boxing commission and racing department.
While Arpaio says this is a straightforward criminal investigation, Wilcox says it's a "vendetta" over her criticism of the sheriff and his methods of enforcing immigration laws.
Wilcox is not the first county supervisor to come under the scrutiny of the sheriff's office. Arpaio was also involved in the investigation of Don Stapley, who was indicted in December on charges related to his financial-disclosure forms.
