Woman drowns after alleged illegal immigrants try to run from policePosted: Updated:
GILA RIVER INDIAN RESERVATION -- One woman is dead and another is in the hospital after more than a dozen suspected illegal immigrants tried to run from police.
Gila River police were following a suspicious-looking van Sunday afternoon when suddenly the driver floored it and tried to get away.
The driver stopped and a total of 17 people bailed out of the van and ran away.
Several of those people jumped into a nearby canal. That's where police found the woman's body.
A second woman was air-lifted to a local hospital.
Authorities are searching the canal or a possible third victim.
Five people were arrested right after bailing out of the van.
Police caught up with nine more in the desert near the San Tan mountains.
