Cell phone scam hits Prescott areaPosted: Updated:
PRESCOTT - The following is a press release is from the Prescott Police Department:
On September 17, 2008 at approximately 2:00 p.m., Prescott Police Records personnel received four phone calls about a suspicious text message citizens had received on their cell phones.
The sender sent a message stating, (misspellings included) "From email@example.com Your Credit Union West account is closed for verification, call at 631.350.1611.
Upon further investigation, we learned the Better Business Bureau received a complaint this morning and the number traces back to New York.
As of our most recent correspondence with the Better Business Bureau, the number has been disconnected.
Should you receive a text message on your cell phone similar to this, please do NOT call the verification number and report it to your local police department for further investigation.
