Lighting strikes Gilbert house - A Gilbert family was lucky to escape safe and sound after lightning apparently struck their home early Tuesday morning.
Crews were called out to the house near Val Vista and Guadalupe Road shortly before 7 a.m.
The entire neighborhood heard the booming strike.
Flames didn't appear for about an hour when the family noticed fire on the second floor of their home. The family -- and grandmother and two kids -- went to a neighbor's to call the fire department.
Fire crews could see the flames over the peak of the house as they arrived on the scene.
Once they made sure everyone was safely out, firefighters tackled the fire and managed to contain the flames to one area of the home. "Good, quick, aggressive action by our crews stopped it from getting up into the attic and hopefully saved these people's home," said Capt. Mike Conner of the Gilbert Fire Department.
While the Gilbert Fire Department does not advise going out into a storm, they do say you need to be aware of what's happening around you.
"If something hits your home or you hear that loud rumble like the neighbors did ... it's good to check and see if you have a mark on your home," Conner said. "It never hurts to call us out, let us come out and check."
No injuries were reported.
