Ariz. lawmakers take school case to Supreme CourtPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Republican legislative leaders are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn lower court orders requiring the state to do more to improve Arizona school programs for students learning English.
A petition filed this week with the high court on behalf of House Speaker Jim Weiers and Senate President Tim Bee asks to review decisions by a federal judge in Tucson and a federal appeals court.
At issue are whether for the state must provide additional funding for English Language Learning programs for approximately 130,000 students beyond levels approved under a state law passed in response to previous court orders.
The Supreme Court has discretion to decide whether to consider the legislative leaders' appeal.
