PHOENIX -- Arizona Secretary of State Jan Brewer is starting to take her first public steps to prepare to become governor.
Brewer has scheduled a Friday afternoon Capitol news conference to announce her selection of a chief of staff, a transition team and a web site.
Brewer, a Republican who has served as secretary of state since 2003, will become governor upon Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano's resignation.
Napolitano plans to step down once the U.S. Senate confirms President-elect Barack Obama's appointment of her as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
The Senate vote can't occur until after Obama's Jan. 20 inauguration.
Brewer is a former state legislator and former Maricopa County supervisor.
