GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK -- Hundreds of parking spaces will be added at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon as part of a construction project that started this week.
Nearly 4 million people visit the South Rim each year, and finding parking can be difficult.
Officials at the Grand Canyon say the project will improve safety and make it easier for tourists to spot the visitor center.
The first phase of the project near a popular lookout point is expected to be complete by November. It includes 600 new parking spaces, a commercial bus parking area and a shuttle bus staging area.
When finished, the entrance road will loop around the Canyon View Information Plaza to the south and west, providing access to the new parking lots and visitor center about 300 yards from Mather Point.
