UPDATE: 2-year-old drowned in pool while dad sleptPosted: Updated:
PEORIA - A 2-year-old Peoria boy drowned in a backyard pool while his father slept inside the family's home Sunday afternoon.
Police say Luis Garcia Jr. had been napping with his father. The toddler apparently woke up and made his way into the backyard, through a gate that had been propped open and fell into the pool. His father, Luis Garcia Sr., 44, was still asleep inside.
Police said Garcia woke up some time later to discover his little son gone and the sliding glass door open.
Garcia went outside and found the toddler at the bottom of the pool. He jumped in to pull him out.
A neighbor performed CPR until rescue crews arrived. Luis was flown to Phoenix Children's Hospital where he later died.
While it's not clear how long Luis was in the water, Peoria Police Department spokesman Mike Tellef said there seems to be a 30-minute timespan during which the boy was on his own.
According to Tellef, the Garcia's pool does have a fence around it, but the a chair was holding the gate open.
Tellef said this is the first drowning in Peoria this year.
It's not clear if Garcia will face any charges in connection with his son's death.
